Univention Summit 2026: OPSI in Dialogue with the Open-Source Community

The Univention Summit 2026 brought together the Open-Source community once again to discuss forward-thinking IT solutions, digital sovereignty, and innovations in the Open-Source domain. We as uib GmbH were present with our Open-Source client management system OPSI and were able to establish valuable contacts while sharing our expertise in system administration, automated software distribution, and IT infrastructure management with the community.

Strong Partnerships and New Connections

The Summit provided us with an excellent platform for direct exchange with the Open-Source community and IT decision-makers from the enterprise sector. We were particularly pleased with the many good conversations with long-standing customers and partners who are already successfully using OPSI in their IT infrastructures for patch management, software deployment, and inventory management. At the same time, we were able to meet many new partners who showed interest in automated software distribution, modern client management, and digital sovereignty.

The combination of Univention Corporate Server (UCS) and OPSI opens up diverse possibilities for IT administrators: While UCS serves as a central identity and infrastructure management platform, OPSI handles the automated management of clients – from operating system installation to software deployment.

Technical Presentation: Windows Network Installation without WinPE

At this years Summit we also held a technical presentation titled “Windows Network Installation without WinPE”. We demonstrated how OPSI breaks new ground for automated Windows installation and OS deployment while dispensing with the traditional Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) – an important building block for efficient IT administration.

This deployment method offers numerous advantages for IT administration:

• Simplified preparation without complex WinPE creation and reduced administrative effort
• No special drivers required as WinPE-specific drivers are eliminated – ideal for heterogeneous IT infrastructures
• Seamless installation process without additional restarts for efficient client management

The participants’ interest in this approach was evident in several follow-up discussions after the presentation.

Open-Source Synergies in Focus

Particularly exciting were the conversations about possible integration scenarios between OPSI and other Open-Source solutions for enterprise IT management. The participants appreciated OPSI’s open approach and the possibility to flexibly adapt the client management system to their specific IT infrastructure requirements.

An important topic that repeatedly came up was digital sovereignty and IT security. OPSI can make a decisive contribution for companies and public institutions here: As an Open-Source solution, it offers complete transparency, vendor independence, and freedom from proprietary vendors. The on-premise operation capability ensures that sensitive corporate data and system configurations remain in the company’s own data center – an important cloud alternative. As a product from a German manufacturer, OPSI also supports compliance with GDPR, data protection, and compliance requirements according to German and European standards.

Our Conclusion

Univention Summit 2026 was a complete success for us and confirmed the growing importance of Open-Source solutions in enterprise client management. The intensive exchange with the IT community, valuable conversations with partners from the system administration field, and positive feedback on our presentation about innovative Windows deployment technologies strengthen us on our path to continuously develop OPSI further.
